whole 30 // week 1

I started whole30 on September 16, so this is day 5 for me! I did a "test meal" on the 15th and then decided to just go ahead and start! 

what is whole30

the hardest thing this first week was trying to get enough calories at first... I've never been a huge vegetable person, so finding vegetables that i liked and would eat was an experiment. i even tried beet chips! no one in my family likes beets... and it turns out that beets don't taste any better in chip form! they were just too sweet for me! this next week we are trying zoodles (noodles made out of zuccini) and cauliflower rice! i think these will go over better! :) 

this first week involved a lot of cooking, but i really didn't mind it as much as i thought i would. of course, i'll still swear by my crockpot since i leave my house at 7am every weekday and don't get home til 6:00-6:30. but a lot of the recipes i've found that are whole30 approved really aren't too involved and don't take that long. plus, i did find a handful of crockpot recipes :) 

i was really tired mid week, but i attribute it to the "carb flu" - when your body is used to having carbs & burning them for energy... when you take the carbs away your body gets confused. eventually it will learn to burn fat for energy, but it takes some getting used to. 

i really do think that i ate because i was bored a lot before. i used to keep crackers and other carb-y snacks at my desk so i would eat them throughout the day. a few weeks before i started whole30 i actually quit bringing the snacks to work & i would realize that i didn't need as many snacks as i was eating. i think my stomach just felt hungry because i knew there was food. since starting the whole30 i'm really not hungry inbetween meals & don't feel the need for snacks. i get full quicker too & i think it's because i was eating empty calories before. 

so far, i like it! it's definitely challenging for someone who didn't have great eating habits, and it's definitely a commitment! there's always offers to go out to eat and it's very hard to do whole30 eating out. then there are birthdays where cake is involved. but i really am not missing junk food or sweets at all. the whole30 diet has definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to try things that i honestly would not have tried before. it's actually been a little easier than i imagined when i was contemplating starting it - i attribute that to all of the awesome whole30 recipes i found! although, we'll see if i still say that after week 2 :)
