Mary, did you know?

during this Christmas season, i am highlighting & reflecting on a few of my favorite Christmas songs.

Mary, did you know?

Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would one day walk on water?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would save our sons and daughters?
Did you know
that your Baby Boy has come to make you new?
This Child that you delivered will soon deliver you

Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy will calm the storm with His hand?
Did you know
that your Baby Boy has walked where angels trod?
When you kiss your little Baby you've kissed the face of God

The blind will see.
The deaf will hear.
The dead will live again.
The lame will leap.
The dumb will speak
The praises of The Lamb.

Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know
that your Baby Boy would one day rule the nations?
Did you know
that your Baby Boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
The sleeping Child you're holding is the Great, I Am

this is easily in my top 5 favorite Christmas songs. i love everything about it & it gives me chills everytime i hear it or sing it. i love trying to imagine what Mary thought while she was raising Jesus & what would go through my head if i were her. even being on this side of the Cross & having the complete Bible & complete access to God that we have, i know that i don't even come close to understanding who Jesus is in His entirety. but, i love that. i love that i serve a God so BIG that he can't be fully understood!

a few sundays ago my pastor actually brought up this song. he was referring to Luke 1:30-33 "And the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call His name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.'" and he said "i can clear up the question we've all been asking....yes, Mary DID know! but, 'Mary, did you understand?' isn't as catchy of a song title" - that made me laugh, but then he said something else about Mary. he said that her faith was another big miracle surrounding Christ's birth. i guess i always think of Jesus being born to a virgin as a miracle. and Jesus being 100% God yet also 100% human as a miracle. and Jesus dying to save us as a miracle. but i've never given much thought to Mary's reaction, her faith & trust in God. but that is also a miracle & another testament to the Lord's faithfulness!

"And Mary said, 'Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.' And the angel departed from her."
[Luke 1:38]

her faith is so inspiring. i don't think my reaction would have been what hers was. she knew that she would be an outcast - pregnant but still a virgin. she knew that Joseph may have a hard time believing as well. she knew that this would be no ordinary child & could only dream what her future held. yet, she wasn't afraid, she didn't run, she didn't question the Lord. she asked how it would be, but she didn't question God's choice in using her. she simply said "let it be" and gratefully served the Lord.
when the Lord asks things of me, I want to answer like Mary - "yes, Lord, I am your servant. let it be."
