DIY type

i love handmaking stuff, but i am not that great at lettering. i'm a perfectionist & can never seem to get the letters to look right. i will write a letter, it will end up looking funky, i will try to thicken it to look better & it just turns out so horrible. so i am all about stencils! the thing i love about stencils is that they give you a good starting point, but the options are endless for how you can customize each project!

i recently got a great stencil set called DIY Type by Dana Tanamachi. included in the book is a large alphabet set, a small alphabet set, and a few design stencils. the first few pages of the book are ideas of how to use these stencils including card making, clothes design, cake & banner decor, wall decor, etc. there are so many things you can use stencils for that i never would have thought about!

i have some fun ideas of how to use these stencils for Christmas wrapping this year, but i also wanted to try these out before then! writing with chalk is so difficult, so i tried out the stencils on a chalkboard & i love the way it came out! i will be using this chalkboard for our Christmas decor this year! i also customized a journal, a few gift tags, and a coffee mug i am giving as a gift!

how do you use stencils?

i received a complimentary copy of this book from Blogging for Books for review purposes. regardless, all opinions are my own.

  7. That's really cool! I can tell you've been getting a lot of use out of it already! I'm not naturally good at artistic lettering, either, so this looks like a cool tool!

  22. once you have the sharpie on, "bake" it in the oven for 30 minutes on 350 and it will help the sharpie to set :)
