how to | get all your Christmas shopping done early

can we let this cat out of the bag? i'm kind of a freak when it comes to organizing Christmas gifts. i'm very type A, plan ahead (WAY ahead), organize with lists, and want to find a great deal. these aspects of my personality probably definitely drive other people crazy, but it's why i make a good accountant! and hey, it takes all kinds to make the world go round!

i realize it's already December, so this post won't really help anyone out for this year. but we had 95% of our Christmas shopping done by October this year & i was thinking about how awesome it is to not have that stress during this busy season, especially with all of the job stuff we have going on. now instead of spending our December away from the people we love trying to find them a gift, we can spend it with them, stress free! so really, that's our gift to ourselves! & i thought i would share how we do it.

if my super type A personality isn't already driving you bonkers... maybe i can convince you how ridiculous it is with another little secret. i'm already planning Christmas gifts for 2015 because Thomas & i plan to make every gift we give next year! i want to have a full 12 months to make them because i want to make great quality gifts and not rush through them because we ran out of time.

o1 | brainstorm!
make a running list of things your friends & family like. pay attention to things they mention throughout the year and the little details of their lives. i love picking out gifts for people rather than asking them for a list because it shows that i pay attention & take the time to know them. i love surprising people so i enjoy picking out unique gifts that fit each person's personality. i'm sure there are a few gifts that people don't really love, but most of the time it works out great & they love getting a unique gift tailored to their personality!

o2 | browse all year round!
keep your running list in mind and browse when you are in Target or little shops downtown. if you go on a trip, buy souvenirs and save them for Christmas gifts. go in stores that are having great deals & see if anything on your list is on sale. in September, Thomas & I stumbled upon a little shop that is new in town & was having a sale. we ended up talking to the shop owners & they pulled out even more merchandise from the back that they were willing to sale for an extra 50% off! (they were already marked down 50%!) we are pretty good at seeing something and immediately matching it with a family member. so we bought a lot of Christmas gifts and birthday gifts for next year while that great deal was happening! it was totally unexpected but we found great gifts for great prices & we are so glad we walked in to browse!

o3 | hunt for sales!
if you have something specific in mind... use sites like retailmenot.com or google coupon codes for the store you want to buy from. or just wait for that store to have a sale. there are random deals throughout the year & you can save a lot on great gifts! for example, i got an email that one of my favorite Etsy shops was having a 65% off sale in August. i own a few of her products & was already thinking of buying some for the women in my family. once i saw the 65% sale i knew it was time to buy! so i bought a bulk order, paid one shipping price, and got 7 gifts in one click of a button! 4 Christmas gifts & 3 birthday gifts for next year!

o4 | keep a list of what you buy & what it's for!
one thing that can be easy to do when you are buying super early is to forget what you have! how many times have you bought something early, forgotten about it, and found it years later when you're cleaning out your closet?! i have a notebook where i write down Christmas gifts on one page & birthday gifts on another page. i have everyone we buy for listed out so i can see who we have something for & who we need to get something for. then when Christmas comes, i use the list to pull things out of the closet & wrap!

o5 | wrap as you go!
this only works if you're sure you have the entire gift, but it helps bring the stress level down at go time! once i got everything together for all the women in our family, i went ahead and wrapped their gifts. over Thanksgiving break, i finished making the gifts for my coworkers & wrapped those. we have the gifts for the guys in our family left to wrap so we only have to worry about 1/3 of our gifts between now & Christmas!

how do you tackle your Christmas shopping?

  5. I love how cute your blog is for Christmas :) also, my christmas shopping is sporadic at best. we write our list of people we're shopping for. figure out the budget per person and then go shopping a few times or order stuff online when we think of it. I would love to be more organized next year!

  8. I can't get over that you were almost done in OCTOBER! That is madness! I've been feeling especially stressed out this year though and that does sound lovely. After going shopping this past Saturday with my hubby and fighting the madness for 6 hours, we came home and ordered a bunch of stuff on Amazon Prime and decided that we were never going out to the stores in person again!

  9. Dang girl. I'm so impressed. I'm only a type-A wannabe (I've got the lists but not the organized forethought to plan so far ahead!) so your being done Christmas shopping in October is so impressive!

  14. well it takes all kinds to make the world go round :) i didn't used to plan so far ahead... until college. i blame it on having so many accounting classes at once... i would've gone crazy without lists and pre-planning! then it just stuck! :)
