surprise 30th birthday

do you know how hard it is to plan a surprise birthday party for your husband? especially, when you carpool to work most mornings. (i was planning this way back in March so we were still carpooling at that point.) it makes it hard to run errands and pick up party supplies. which is why i decided that i would turn to my trusted friend Minted! the artists at Minted develop party decor packages so you can get everything coordinated and sent straight to your door!

another thing i love about Minted is that you can personalize everything! so, not only was i able to get coordinating party decor for what i needed... i was able to personalize it to fit my party! so, instead of just having a sign that says "cake" i was able to make it say "let them eat cake" which just sounds more fun! (fun fact: this quote wasn't said by Marie Antoinette... but may have been said by some duchess somewhere!)

i went with the Blackboard Perfection party decor since it was the least girly decor of all the ones i liked. since the party was for Thomas, i figured he wouldn't want a lot of flowers all over the room! plus, the banner can be used again so the more versatile, the better! i really wanted to get matching invites to send out, but it just wasn't in the budget. so, i designed my own simple black & white invitations.

since i was bringing Thomas to the party, i couldn't go early to set up, but i have awesome parents who picked up the cake & an awesome sister-in-law who decorated the room for me! we had the party in the back room of Thomas's favorite BBQ place & i got him there under the rouse that we were meeting my family to celebrate all of the May birthdays (we have 3 just in my immediate family). we celebrate them together every year, so it was completely believable.

there were 4 couples who cancelled last minute due to various reasons, so i was a little nervous that more people wouldn't be able to come. but we ended up having about 20-25 people, so it was still a nice size. overall, the party was a hit & Thomas was really surprised! he said he had no idea something was up until he walked in & people shouted surprise. this was his first ever surprise party, so it was fun that we got him good!

  1. Awww! Great job! I definitely know the challenge of planning a surprise when you live with the man. haha! Angel's 30th was last year and I did have a few surprises for him--notably I got my grandma to back his favorite cake that she makes and bring it to the tractor show where my family gets together that weekend every year. Angel himself spontaneously invited a few friends to the tractor show, not knowing the birthday plans, so it was extra cool when we suddenly brought out the cake and the family plus a few of his best friends were there to celebrate with him!

  3. FIRST OF ALL, are you both wearing striped shirts on purpose? ha!
Also, this is great because Jordan's 30th is this July, and I want to plan something fun for him! But I'm really not coming up with any ideas I love. Those cards are great! I love Minted.

  6. You are SUCH a sweet wife!!!!! I absolutely love surprises and I'm assuming my brother will too, bc I'm throwing him one this Saturday! (Meanwhile Devin has made a list of "threats" that will become real if I even THINK about throwing him a surprise party! Haha). Your decorations are so so cute, and it looks like such a nice time! Your minted stuff is always the cutest :)

  18. It went well!! Our friends are crazy tho and drove my brother to his surprise party blindfolded and in the trunk! Pretty sure that's illegal and I was all "what if there had been an accident?!" When they arrived. Haha
