a day at the zoo

we became zoo members this year since we are living very close to the zoo around here. if you know me at all you know that i am an animal lover, and so most of our dates end up involving animals. zoo membership is a great way to get outside, have a free date day, and get to interact with animals all in one!

we have already gone enough times since we got the membership in December to more than make up for the money it cost to buy it. if you live close to a zoo it really does make sense to become a member if you will go more than 2 times a year (which let's face it, we will!). it is nice also because we know that we can come back anytime we want, so we don't feel rushed to get through every exhibit each time we visit.

animals have so much personality so it is fun to go to exhibits at different times of the day and catch animals when they are most active. it is also nice because we can stay at one exhibit for as long as we like and not feel like we are missing out since we can come back. both times we have been so far this year we have not been there during the times they let you feed the giraffe, so that is on our list next time we go! below are some photos that we caught of these characters on our most recent visit! :)

writing | our world

the whole world is at your fingertips
just pick a place you want to go
and i will take you there my dear
with all our dreams in tow

the Eiffel Tower or Trevi Fountain
it doesn't matter much you see
because anywhere i go with you
feels like home sweet home to me

the freedom that is given me
in the way you love me so
allows me to feel secure
like that day so long ago

when you took my hand and told me
you'd always be by my side
and then you went and proved it
when you made me your bride

and now the world is open to us
there's no place i'd rather be
than right next to you
as you're right next to me

project 12 | 2016 | part five

i love having my years captured month by month and plan to keep up with project 12 this year in a few different chunks. you can read about January-March here, April-May here, June-August here, and September-October here.

this month went by in a blur due to all of the end of the semester papers and presentations. we didn't even go visit family during Thanksgiving break because i spent the entire time working on papers. my friend Rebecca did stay for a night while she was passing through to her roommate's house for Thanksgiving, so that was a nice break!

the saddest thing that happened this month was that our sweet little blue eyed bunny passed away. ): we think it was due to GI tract issues because rabbit's stomachs are really sensitive. but it was hard to tell. we had him for a year exactly the week that he passed away so that was really sad.

we did, however, find out a lop around the same age as Finn needed to be adopted from a rescue shortly after. so we went to meet her & ended up adopting her since we had extra room. we named her Luna Lovegood. :) we weren't planning on getting another bunny so soon but she is the sweetest and it helped to heal the wounds from losing Finn.

November 5 - campfire & s'mores with my family
November 12 - day trip to Charleston
November 16 - our sweet little Finn passed away ):
November 17 - we buried Finn & made him a Dobby-esque grave stone
November 19 - we adopted Luna Lovegood the bunny
November 22-23 - my friend Rebecca came to visit
November 24-27 - finishing all of my final papers & presentations

we went to the 50th governor's carolighting of the Christmas tree at the state house since we're in the capital this year. it was neat to see & made me super excited for the Christmas season. it was the night before my last day of grad school for the semester so it was a celebration of sorts! of course, as it almost always happens i was sick the entire first weekend of my break. but it was good to rest and do absolutely no schoolwork over the weekend!

this month was really packed with family get togethers & Christmas parties. it was fun to have our weekend's packed with fun stuff, rather than school work, but exhausting still the same! we also loaded all of our pets and stayed with our families for 11 days, so we were away from home for a while as well. i feel like so much was packed into this month because we really hadn't done much over the semester. it is nice to see our families so much, but we also realized we need to make time for our little family as well. so we made New Years weekend our weekend and took a day trip to Charleston as well as some afternoon adventures outside!

December 1 - Christmas tree lighting at the state house
December 2 - the last day of class for the semester!
December 3-5 - sick as a dog ):

twenty seventeen

i don't do new years resolutions simply because i make mini goals for myself all throughout the year and don't want to wait until January 1 to start something. it generally turns out that once January comes i'm in the midst of something i started a few months prior. plus, making a goal for an entire year is just way too overwhelming to me so i prefer to stick to my ongoing mini goals.

for the past few years (2014, 2015, 2016) i have chosen a word for the year though, to start the year off in the direction that i hoped to continue on. my word for 2016 was trust, because at the time i chose that word i was in the midst of applying to grad school and praying about the career change i would be embarking on if accepted. i knew i needed to place my trust in the Lord with all of the changes that 2016 would hold. and it was good for me to process through that even before anything started happening with grad school, leaving my job, and moving to a new city.

2016 was a very busy year for us. i got accepted to grad school, made the decision to pursue my dreams, drove to our new city a lot to set things up for school and my internship, we purged our house and got it ready to sell, we sold our house, became nomads for a few months, i quit my job, we moved to a new city, and i successfully completed the first semester of my MSW program. thinking back on everything that 2016 held makes me feel exhausted!

now it's 2017 and my second semester of grad school has started full force. i'm back to full days in class and internship, with hundreds of pages to read on nights and weekends. last semester i only had 2-3 days where i did no school work and i am hoping to have more than that this semester. i'm working on planning a schedule to get more done on weeknights so i can have some weekend time to spend with Thomas. so that is my main goal this semester.

in looking at 2017 as a full year of grad school, including classes over the summer, my first thought is that my word should be survive. and sadly that was my main goal during my first semester because i wasn't sure what to expect. so trying to keep up with everything going on just had me in survival mode. however, i want to do more than just survive this year. because as much as i want to get schooling behind me and start my new career, i also want to live the year that i have in front of me. so i've chosen thrive as my word for 2017. i want to thrive as well as survive this year, and really enjoy the year in the midst of all the busy days. i want to live life this year rather than push through this year just to get to the next stage of my life. it's easy to look forward and survive, but it's harder to be still in the moment and thrive.

"You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore."
Psalm 16:11

2016 | a rundown

2016 has been a year of transition in the best of ways. last January i was still working full time as a corporate accountant, and this January i will be starting my second semester of grad school for my master of social work. last January we were living in the same city as most of our family, and this January we are two hours away. last January we were getting our house ready to sell, and this January we are settling into our apartment. last January i was uncertain of the next step we would take, and this January we are in the midst of this next step.

this has been a slower year for me in regards to blogging because i write so much for school. but i wanted to compile my top favorite blog posts from this year, to acknowledge all of the changes that have taken place. January 2017 is starting off in a completely different place than January 2016 did, and i couldn't be more glad to be on this side of the changes. so here's to remembering everything that 2016 taught me, and looking forward to everything that 2017 will teach me too!

what has been your biggest takeaway from this year?
